Understanding the Billing
Process
Most commercial insurance
providers as well as Medicare, Medicaid cover
medically necessary ambulance transportation. Midwest Medical Transport Company
submits all claims to insurance companies and
Medicare as a part of our service. Once the
insurance payers pay their portion of the billed
services, if there is a remaining balance due from
the patient, we will then bill the patient.
Should you ever have a billing
question, our team will be here to guide you through
the billing process. Our billing department is
located in the Corporate office in Columbus,
Nebraska and can be reached at 1-800-562-3396,
option #2.
Medicare Coverage
Generally, Medicare will cover
most medically necessary ambulance transportation to
the nearest appropriate medical facility.
Emergency ambulance
transportation is covered after you have had a
sudden medical emergency, when your health is in
serious danger, and when every second counts to
prevent your health from getting worse. Medicare
will only cover ambulance services to the nearest
appropriate medical facility that is able to give
you the care you need. If you choose to be
transported to a facility farther away, Medicare’s
payment will be based on the charge to the closest
facility.
Non-emergency ambulance
transportation is covered when you need
transportation to diagnose or treat your health
condition and you cannot be transported by any other
means. You must have signed doctors orders to have
these services considered by Medicare.
If we believe that Medicare
will not pay for your non-emergency ambulance
service, we will ask you to sign an Advance
Beneficiary Notice. This notice provides the
information regarding the possible non-payment of
Medicare and allows you the option of accepting the
services realizing you may be responsible for the
payment of the transport.
For in-depth
information on Medicare’s policies regarding
coverage for ambulance services you can visit
Medicare’s website at:
www.medicare.gov, select “Search Tools” and then
select “Find a Medicare Publication,” and choose the
“Medicare Coverage of Ambulance Services” booklet.
Or, you may call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 for
information.
Commercial Insurance
Coverage
Ambulance transportation
coverage varies from insurance polity to policy. It
is important to review your insurance coverage to
understand the limitations and requirements of your
coverage. Most emergency transfers are covered and
many non-emergency transfers are covered as well,
based on your insurance provider’s criteria for
meeting medical necessity.
Private Pay
If you do not have insurance
coverage, Midwest Medical Transport Company will bill you for the services. Midwest Medical Transport Company
accepts cash, personal checks, VISA and Mastercard.
